Soccer coaching tips for 6 – 9 year olds

Here are some key points to ensure your training sessions hit the spot and your players get the maximum amount out of each session:

µ     Start sessions with a fun game, include the use of the ball as much as possible.

µ     Introduce static stretches to mix in with the dynamic warm up

µ     Keep instructions, drills and exercises simple

µ     Ensure the players learn through playing soccer

µ     Use small sided games, 2v2, 3v3, 4v4

µ     If you’ve got willing assistants or enthusiastic supporters use them to help organise and oversee games

µ     Ensure lots of goals can be scored, young players like scoring goals

µ     Encourage them to celebrate their goals

µ     Try to ensure that every player has a ball, at least one between two

µ     Keep instructions simple and short – KISS principle

In summary, make sure that all of your players are involved and are active during the coaching session, have plenty of balls for players to practice with, brief explanations of simple rules and instructions, use demonstrations, offer lots of praise and encouragement, let the players enjoy the game.
