Soccer Midfield Link Up Play Drill
We have written a few drills and articles about the importance of coaching your players to make overlapping runs. Overlapping runs can help unbalance a defence to create opportunities to attack in advanced areas of the pitch. Getting your full backs to support the attack and initiate attacks down the channels is a great way to exploit any frailties in your opponents. In this three part drill, you'll discover how to set up a technical practice, then develop it through to an functional play and then to a game like extended drill using a half to three quarter pitch practice. ORGANISATION
Set up a half pitch practice just as you see in the video below. The aim of this element of the session is to develop your players sense of shape, where their team mates are and also to develop a pattern of play so that when they find themselves in a situation during they can quickly mobilise and attack your opponents. The drill starts with the first person in the line, in this instance Red 1 playing a ball into Yellow 7. Yellow 7 then makes a pass into Yellow 8. Red 1 makes an advancing run behind Yellow 7 and anticipates a pass from Yellow 10 so that they can then attack down the channels. Once they pick up the ball the player Red 1 should then cross over and join the opposite line. You can have both left and right sides operating simulteanously. The factor here is to ensure that players understand the movement that is required. A full explanation is included in the video.
You should practice this element for 5 - 10 minutes, rotating the middle players.
