Improve Your Teams Performance With One Technique?
All outfield players will receive a ball at some point during the match. Whether they play in defense, midfield or attack... if your players develop the ability to turn with the ball when they receive it they will wreak havoc on your opponents. You may be thinking that this doesn't sound like much of a tip, but let me share a very simple but effective truth with you. Most coaches don't know what to teach their players. In fact, they think that setting up a drill with cones, bibs, poles etc... and having the players go through the motions of the drill is what coaching is about. It's NOT! Effective coaching comes from the small, simple pieces of information you ingrain in your players that makes them better. Developing the understanding of space, where and how to control the ball on the first touch is what separates great players from average players. When a young player is able to turn with the ball and look to receive the ball with an open body position the quicker their game will improve. This is one coaching point all coaches should give to their junior players... and reinforce with their youth players too. I've always imparted to my players the importance of knowing where space is, where pressure is likely to come from and how to take a ball in an open body stance. With an open body stance players are able to see the field of play and can easily pop a ball off to a supporting team, switch the play in one movement or drive forward. Many players kill the game by stopping the ball As soon as the ball goes dead, you opponents can get back in shape and get numbers in, and around the ball. Your team loses momentum. I know many of you reading this have been subscribing to my tip of the week for many years, but recently we've had a massive influx of new subscribers wanting to tap into my knowledge. Why? Because they realise that what I share works. I've been running my own team now for 9 years. I took a bunch of 5 year olds and turned them into league champions. Not once but twice... and while we're looking forward to the season ahead our opponents are already fearing coming up against us. There aren't any superstars. We've not cherry picked the best talent in our local area. What the players do is keep the game simple. You don't need to coach hundreds of points to make them better players just a few key principles that you repeat over and over in a variety of fun but challenging ways. Receiving the ball in an open body stance is one such technique. There are many more and you'll find them in the members only area of Junior Soccer Coach. (http://www.juniorsoccercoach.com) Is This Tip Too Simplistic? Now, for some coaches they'll think this tip is too simplistic and you couldn't possibly make better players by this alone... that's OK. But if you're one of the open minded coaches who grasps this powerful principle and you commit to work with your players for the next few sessions on their body shape when receiving the ball... you'll notice a massive difference in their individual and team performance. With the new season ahead of us here in the UK I've got so much lined up for you to implement with your team where ever you are in your season.
