How to defend and attack from set pieces

A significant amount of goals are scored from set plays, like free kicks, corners, throw ins, penalties and even right from the re-start / kick off itself.

More often than not the sound of the referees whistle causes players to momentarily switch off from the game and this is when a team is at its most dangerous. A team that keeps their concentration, organises themselves quickly and are prepared will take advantage on most occassions, whether this is defending or attacking.

When definding, players should switch on and mark opponents, for free kicks walls must be built and positioned correctly, if the defence is slow to get themselves together they hand the initiative to the opponents.  When attacking positional play is important and pre-designated positions, plays and manouevers can often unlock a defence, even if they are well organised.

Use this department to help coach your team on set plays. Think about it, evenly matched teams need an edge to win the game, make sure your team is prepared to defend and attack in such situations by using the drills and exercises in this soccer set play department.
