Ball Control - Cone Dribble 1

AIM

A excellent exercise that promotes good close control, dribbling and develops fitness. Simple to set up and will get players on the move and involved.

ORGANISATION

Set up a gate from where the players start. Then set up two lines of 5 cones as per the diagram. Players start through the gates and have to dribble the ball around the cones and then return back to the start.

This is a particularly good exercise with younger players, as you can have a good view of all the players techniques.

EQUIPMENT

one ball per player, 14 cones

COACHING POINTS

CLOSE CONTROL

  • Players should be on their toes
  • Arms out to the side for balance and for shielding the ball
  • Keep the body over the ball
  • Knees bent slightly, keeping a low centre of gravity
  • Small and delicate touches of the ball
  • Use both the 'big toe & little toe' to keep the ball under control, and use the appropriate part of the foot to cut the ball around the cones
  • The ball should stay within 12 inch radius of the player
  • Players to keep their eye on the ball, with occassional glances to the position of their intended target
  • The player should be focused on the ball at all times
  • As mastery is gained use both feet to gain control and move
  • PROGRESSION

    1. Have the players start to walk the exercise to start
    2. Increase the tempo, once ball mastery is gained
    3. Maybe set up two sets of lanes and have a relay competition

    TIP

Here the players are working in a straight line, this doesn't often happen in a game and players wil be required to zig zag more, so you could always randomly place the cones to ensure the zig zagging movement is acheived.
