A Simple Goalkeeping Exercise

Whilst on holiday I watched an Under 16's training session that took place near to our hotel. A very simple, but effective, excercise helped increase the confidence and grip on a ball for a goalkeeper.

Here it is:- The goalkeeper sat on the ground and did a sit up whilst holding the soccer ball. As the ball was brought up & forward the coach kicked the ball. As the goalkeeper got used to the exercise the coach increasd the power of his kick each time. Thinking back to my goalkeeping days, the ball was often kicked as I had it in my hands from a save or attacking the ball at the forwards feet.

You can see here how we re-created this same exercise using a goalkeeper from an U10 team.  Notice too how we have adapted the exercise, so that we aren't kicking the ball at him but throwing it.

This is a very good example of what is meant by repetitive pressure.  Note that this exercise should only last a couple of minutes.
