Are you an effective demonstrator?

Good coaches not only talk to the players about what to do, they demonstrate. But what do you do as the players advance and become more technically able than you?

Think about this, a track and field coach whose specialises in sprint training will not be able to run a sub 10 second 100 metres themselves!

Heres three simple alternatives to use to get the message across.....

1. Use a pre-selected player who you have briefed and can competently demonstrate to the whole group. Let them know theres no pressure and to just do their best.

2. Use the discovery approach, either individually or collectively in groups. Here pose the question, articulate the skill or play then watch for players to perform. When you see a successful execution, stop the practice and ask them to demonstrate for the whole group.

3. If youve got facilities that you can show videos or use wall charts use them. Players often need to see something in operation before they can internalise it.

An example of this is if you were coaching a specific set piece play where you want prescribed players to attack certain predetermined zones etc. This could effectively be shown on a flip chart or clip board with a series of Xs and Os.

One last hint, always ask players questions to test their understanding when youve used visual aids such as a flip chart.

This will test their comprehension and keep the sessions moving when you go to physically enact the play.
