Better understanding of playing positions will improve team performance

When you watch a good a team performance, it stems from a sound understanding of the function of the players in that particular system.

For example, let�s assume your playing a 4 3 3 formation where you want the right back to make overlapping runs, receive the ball from the right midfield player and whip a cross the ball into the box for the strikers.

To fully understand the quality and type of delivery that strikers appreciate, the right back should occasionally play in that position.

If you practice this occasionally in your training sessions there will be a deeper understanding from the players of the requirements of other team positions and therefore they should see the bigger picture.

There are also additional fringe benefits of mixing up your players into �alien� positions.

For example, if a striker with weak tackling skills is put at right back to play in defence, they will be given plenty of opportunities to practice their jockeying and tackling skills!
