Soccer Defending With A Flat Back Four - Knowing When To Drop Off & Press

This soccer drill is designed to help the back four of the defensive line understand when to press up the pitch, when to drop off and also how to move laterally across the pitch all in relation to the player in possession of the ball.

Initially, this drill is a functional drill since we are working in the key area of the pitch where the defenders would be required to work and position themselves in.

In order to progress the functional drill, add in more players like, a striker to play in between the two centre halfs and two wing players.

To finish off the session add in more players for the defensive team and the attacking team utilising the whole squad and play attack vs defense.

Remember though, the key coaching points here should be directed at the back four and whether they work together as a unit.

Watch the video now...

KEY COACHING POINTS

  1. As the ball travels so should the defenders
  2. As the ball travels further up the pitch, so the defenders should push higher too
  3. If the attacking player in possession looks like they're going to play a direct lon ball in over the top the defenders should pedal backwards keeping their eyes on the ball and any runs from offensive players too
  4. They should move as a coordinated unit, as if there is an invisible cord attacked to each of them, maintaining distances and pulling them in the same direction
  5. Clear communication as to when to get out or push up and when to drop back.
